In the first chapter of the book of James there is an analogy that cuts to the core of so many of us. Verse 11 in the NIV reads,
“For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant, its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich man will fade away while he goes about his business.”
Is that our end – to just wilt away like a Christmas poinsettia or an Easter lily after the holiday is past? To leave this life while we are just going about our business, doing our thing – will that be our legacy?
For so many of us, life is “going about our business.” James is clear in pointing out whose business the rich man is pursuing as his life wilts away: his own. Is that to be our end, pursuing our plans and our objectives, doing business as usual, only to be interrupted by our homegoing?
Is our life just “business as usual,” or, can there be more? How about doing business differently? Not to provide a paycheck, but for God’s glory. When God calls us home do you think He cares about balance sheets or profit and loss statements for our businesses? Will he care about our businesses’ rate of return? We all know He does not. So, why do we live as though He will? We will not enter Heaven with our business resume in hand. God is keeping His own resume for each of us, and there is no P&L or balance sheet, with dollar signs attached.
The only earthly thing that will be of importance is, “What did we do with Jesus, and how have we impacted the lives of others for the Kingdom?”
Yes, I’m a businessman, and I’m past the usual retirement age. My hope, and prayer, is that God will grant me the grace, strength and ability to keep doing business until the end. The difference is in our purpose: To What End? His or ours? The choice is ours to make.
