What Does God Want?
The Second Article in the Series on Starting a BAM Company
Conventional business wisdom says to start with an unmet need in the market—and we’ll discuss this in a later article in this series. But for now, let’s keep the main thing the main thing. What does God want? Business as Mission is not me doing business for God; it is me doing business with God.
First Questions
What does God want me to do? Where is He going? Am I willing to follow His lead? I’d far rather trust God to give the right idea, the right geography, and the right strategy according to His plan than rely on my limited brain, my finite knowledge, and my plans. So, let’s start with two fundamental questions:
First, have I presented my entire life to the Father as a living sacrifice in response to the Son’s sacrifice for me. “Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.” Romans 12:1
Second, have I asked, “Lord, where will You have me to go? What will You have me to do?” What are You doing?”
First Actions
If you accept the First Questions, then the first action is to pray. I know that sounds “religious” and “churchy.” But in Scripture, the followers of God prayed…a lot! They prayed for food. They prayed in battle. They prayed when they were sick. They prayed for direction. And God answered. It’s what He does!
Commit time to pray and pray for as long as it takes for you to begin to discern ideas and plans that are coming from God. I have made countless business mistakes because I failed to pray or I was too impatient to wait on the Lord. He knows what He’s doing and He wants to lead you. Trust Him!
Walk into What’s Open
There may be a small door opening—an email, an invitation, an idea, a short-term job, a class. There is something in front of you that, likely, God intends for you to embrace. He doesn’t usually show us the whole plan. Most often God shows us the next step or two. Take those steps and see what He does. The good news is that, even if you make a mistake, you won’t undo the sovereign designs of the Creator and you might learn something. Walk forward with confidence in Him!
Conclusion
You may be on the edge of a big decision or you may be simply exploring the idea of starting a BAM company. Either way, you can’t go wrong with seeking the Father and asking Him what He wants.
