A Vision Trip to the Balkans: Uncovering BAM Opportunities By Sandra Lynn

Introduction: Why the Balkans and Business As Mission (BAM)?

As a first-generation American with German roots, I’ve always had a global perspective. My early passion for cross-cultural experiences began at age 15 during my first solo trip abroad to Venezuela. This journey, combined with a career in international settings, naturally led me to explore Business As Mission (BAM). Despite challenges in finding the right organization for short-term missions, I chose to take initiative and explore opportunities in the Balkans.

My BAM Journey: From Passion to Action

Coming to Christ as an adult profoundly changed my worldview. I sought meaningful ways to integrate my entrepreneurial spirit with my faith. Coaching programs introduced me to BAM’s principles, emphasizing collaboration and hands-on involvement. Yet, I craved a deeper connection, prompting me to embark on a short-term vision trip to the Balkans.

Why I Chose the Balkans

Despite lacking language skills or local contacts, I felt a strong pull toward the Balkans. The region’s rich history, cultural resilience, and economic transition presented unique business opportunities. Key growth sectors include:

  • Information Technology (IT)
  • Agriculture
  • Tourism
  • Professional Services
  • Manufacturing

The Balkans’ strategic location near EU and non-EU markets positions it as a prime logistics hub for businesses seeking European and Asian expansion.

Highlights of My Balkan Adventure

Over three weeks, I visited 10 countries, experiencing diverse cultures and landscapes. Notable moments included:

  • Walking Paul’s Steps in Thessaloniki: A spiritual highlight that connected me with biblical history.
  • Meeting Local Entrepreneurs: Insightful conversations revealed the region’s economic potential and collaborative opportunities.
  • Partnering with Mission Agencies: Connections with organizations in Albania and Macedonia opened doors for future projects.

The journey underscored a contrast between the region’s scars from past conflicts and its hopeful path toward growth and stability.

Creating Your Own Vision Trip: 3 Practical Steps

Step 1: Planning

  • Choose a Destination: Focus on a region of personal or professional interest.
  • Research Thoroughly: Study local culture, history, and business climate.
  • Network in Advance: Connect with local entrepreneurs, attend business conferences, and schedule meetings.

Step 2: Going

  • Stay Flexible: Expect logistical challenges—border crossings, varying transportation, and currency differences (Euro, Serbian Dinar, Bulgarian Lev).
  • Prepare Technologically: Ensure mobile devices are ready for electronic payments and connectivity.
  • Embrace Cultural Diversity: Respect the region’s religious and cultural nuances.

Step 3: Serving

  • Engage Meaningfully: Offer expertise aligned with local needs.
  • Build Lasting Relationships: Prioritize mutually beneficial connections.
  • Reflect and Apply: Bring insights back to enrich personal growth and future projects.

Final Thoughts: Stepping Out in Faith

Are you ready to explore BAM opportunities? Consider these takeaways from my journey:

  • Be open to the Holy Spirit’s leading—even when it defies logic.
  • Challenge your expectations and embrace discomfort.
  • Stay persistent: “Ask, seek, knock,” as Luke encourages.
  • Take that first step: Sometimes, action leads to clarity and purpose.

The Balkans trip wasn’t just an adventure—it was a catalyst for my next chapter in serving the Kingdom of God through business. I’m seeking partners and resources to continue this work. Interested in joining the journey? Let’s connect!
